Why Mortar Ridges Fail

Traditional ridge tiles are bedded on sand and cement. Over the years, frost, sun and roof movement make the mortar crack and fall out. Once the bedding goes, ridge tiles can rock loose and even blow off in strong winds, leaving a gap along the top of the roof.

How a Dry Ridge System Works

A dry ridge system screws or clips each ridge tile to a timber batten along the top of the roof. A flexible roll seals underneath the tiles and lets air out of the roof space. There is no wet mortar, so there is nothing to crack or wash away.

Meeting Current Building Standards

The current British Standard for slating and tiling, BS 5534, calls for ridge tiles to be mechanically fixed rather than relying on mortar alone. A dry ridge system meets this. It is a sensible upgrade when you are having the ridge re-bedded or the whole roof replaced.
