Choosing the Right Mortar

The mortar needs to suit the bricks. Older chimneys were often built with lime mortar, which lets the brickwork breathe. Using a hard cement mortar on soft old bricks can trap moisture and damage the brick faces. The mix should always match the chimney.

Signs Your Chimney Needs Repointing

From the ground or an upstairs window, look for joints that look deep, dark or empty. Soft, sandy or missing mortar is the main sign. You may also see plants growing from the stack or damp patches on the chimney breast inside after heavy rain.
